The building with its living quarters and its workshops was still standing there at the Vrijdagmarkt (Friday Market). It had to his utter amazement withstood the centuries and survived wars and revolutions. The first thing Christoffel Plantin wanted to do was to restart his printing and publishing company De Gulden Passer (The Golden Compasses), but unfortunately this was not possible. As a matter of fact, he was not the owner anymore of the Officina Plantiniana. The building, the furnishings and the old printing presses had been sold to the city of Antwerp. His property and belongings were turned into a museum with the help of one or another international organization. It was now known as the . He had contacted the city council and had tried to convince the mayor to annul the deed of sale, but the venerable man had attached no credence whatsoever to the story that he, Christoffel Plantin, had returned from the past because of a disruption of the space-time continuum. The mayor had declared him insane and would have put him in a mental hosptital if he had not known so much about the ins and outs of the publishing house in the sixteenth century. He could get a job as a guide in the museum though. And so it came to pass that he showed tourists around in the costume he had arrived in.
